Introduction to the

Fundamental Teachings of the Rosy Cross

In these pages and in the many other publications issued by the Fraternitas Rosæ Crucis and the Philosophical Publishing Company you will find certain words and phrases whose meaning and interpretation are vital to the understanding of the fundamental teachings and the instructions offered. In this Introduction we shall do our best to provide the serious seeker with a modern definition of the key words and phrases used by the past and present Initiate teachers and Arcane Masters.

The terms “Initiate” and “Arcane Master,” as well as many other similar terms used in arcane literature, refer to an individual who has so lived in harmony with the Divine Law that he or she has become conscious of the Soul within. This exalted state of being is now called Soul Illumination. But over the centuries various other names have been used to describe this spiritual state of soul development, such as Soul Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, Philosophical Initiation and Mastership. While there are subtle differences between these various stages of soul development, they all indicate a specific degree of spiritual attainment from Illumination onward.

Beginning in ancient Egypt and India, and continuing to the present, “Mystery Schools” taught their students the immortality of the soul and how to attain this grand spiritual summit. Even Jesus referred to these “Mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.” The most essential keys to an understanding of what the Nazarene referred to, as the “Mysteries,” are these four terms:

*     Divine Law

*     Great Work

*     Transmutation

*     Soul Illumination

Once the individual is able to attain a working comprehension of the meaning of these four terms, he or she has opened the door to the first of the Mysteries mentioned by the Teacher from Nazareth. While a great many other terms are used in our texts and literature, most of them are either synonyms of these four or various degrees of them.

Everything we do falls under some component of the Divine Law. It is simply the Law that governs in all things in both Heaven and Earth. If we learn to live in harmony with it, we will prosper; if we do not, we will be “corrected” by the reaction of our own attempted disobedience. We will always reap what we sow.

It is our earthly mission, through our own efforts and initiative, is to not only make this a better world, but also to produce a little more than we need so that those who really cannot help themselves will be helped along life's rough path. It is our spiritual mission to make every effort to bring into consciousness the Divine spark hidden within us and which fell into unconsciousness when the soul left its heavenly estate and fell into an earthly body. In other words, we are here to be both a server of humanity and a servant of God.

We must experience and suffer in order to know love and its opposite. We are here to free ourselves from the taint of hate and its attendant evils by replacing them with love. As we perform this process of transmutation, we retain the wisdom gained, and by desire and continued effort, become like the advanced Celestial beings that God intended us to become.

The Great Work is our reason for being. This Great Work, if followed with dedication and persistence, along with daily successful efforts at transmutation, will eventually lead to Soul Illumination, a state of spiritual consciousness in which the truth of immortality is made self-evident. It is a state in which the Soul is in direct contact with its Creator and all else that is good in God’s Creation. This is not a promise of future health and happiness; it is an assurance of both- here and now.
